A health coach has a different task: not to make a perfect body with muscles but to change a person’s lifestyle. The functions of health coaching are varied:

  • Find the ideal regime for the day: some people are happy to work out in the morning, while others can only wake themselves up in the evening.
  • Change the food system: the composition, quality, and timing of food depend not only on weight but also on how clients feel. 
  • If necessary, refer a person to a masseur for a course in sports, relaxing, or recreational massage. 
  • Based on various signs and complaints of fast fatigue, pain, etc.: determine the need for a visit to the doctor. 

All this and much more an experienced health coach gathers in an individual program. Their goal is not just to inform the client but to motivate them to do it.

However, it is possible to notice that very many points are closely intertwined with the profession of a personal trainer. Here are some critical points when comparing personal training and health coaching:

The trainer’s job is to create a training program of the most effective exercises oriented on the client’s abilities. The trainer needs to explain the expediency of the exercises performed and which muscles work.

If we talk about a health coach, then their scope of work will be a little more extensive. Yes, just like a personal trainer, a health coach controls the client’s health, recommends what exercises to do, and tracks the weight and nutrition of the client, to make it balanced and useful. But besides these responsibilities, a qualified health coach has to teach a client a healthy lifestyle, for example, to give up bad habits like smoking and alcohol. Or to learn how to work with stress, as it is detrimental to the body’s overall health. 

But it is worth remembering that if a health coach is not a certified nutritionist, they cannot recommend specific diets. This is better left to a professional.

Time with the client

There will be a perfectly logical explanation. The client meets a personal trainer, for example, 2 times a week in the gym and 1 time a week outdoors. In total, a client sees a personal trainer only 3 times a week, and during that time, they do sports.

Working with a health coach is designed a little differently. The fact is that health coaching is focused on long-term work because changing habits takes a large amount of time. During this time, the client can meet with the coach for various discussions. But if needed, the client can write to the coach and deal with some issues in the online format. It is not a certain number of meetings per month, it is a long process that will help the client to develop strength and conditioning.

To explain in a nutshell: a personal trainer is concerned with building the desired body, and a health coach touches on nutrition and mindset, which changes in a positive direction. That’s why meetings and communication with a health coach can be more frequent.


Many people think that a health coach should take clients to the gym just like a personal trainer. But there is not so, a health coach is like a psychologist, who can work in an office or at their clients’ homes. If the client is comfortable, the meeting can take place even in the park, and this is absolutely normal. 

Personal trainers, in turn, can conduct personal training not only in the gym but also in other places if conditions allow. It can be at the same park, where the trainer will show exercises in the fresh air.

Both the personal trainer and the health coach have a lot in common and their main goal is to help the client. But they do it in different ways and methods. 

A personal trainer prepares a workout program for their client to help improve physical performance, telling them what they need to do to achieve results and how to do it: sports on a schedule, correct nutrition, etc.

The health coach uses a little different approach. If a fitness trainer works as a mentor, who can incline a client to exercise, then a health coach rather works as a consultant and advises what would be better. This means the client is given more freedom to act and make more independent decisions, and the coach only guides. This means that the client decides when to exercise, what and when to eat, etc.
